Hey there, F&B (food and beverages) enthusiasts! Today, I want to talk to you about two exciting filming techniques that can really make your products stand out: slow motion and stop motion.
First up, let’s talk about filming in slow motion. Slow motion video can be a really powerful tool for showcasing the texture and movement of food and beverages. It can help to highlight the way that a drink flows into a glass, or the way that a chocolate bar melts in someone’s mouth. Slow motion can also be used to show off the intricate details of a dish, like the way that a sauce is drizzled over a steak, or the way that a pastry is flaky and buttery.
To achieve slow motion video, you’ll need to shoot at a high frame rate (such as 100 or 240 frames per second) and then play it back at a lower frame rate (such as 25 or 30 frames per second). This will give you that smooth, slow-motion effect. You can also use software to slow down the footage even more, if you want to really draw attention to a specific moment. However, without filming in a high frame rate when initially filming, the clips can seem jittery and that can turn out badly. So be careful of slowing down clips that are already shot at a low frame rate
One thing to keep in mind when shooting slow motion video is that you’ll need to have enough light to get a good exposure. Slow motion video requires more light than regular video because the camera is capturing more frames per second. So, make sure when filming to use plenty of lights or shoot in a well-lit area. So while yes, of course you can film your food videos in slow motion using your stunning iPhone camera or any a higher-end Android phones, as these phone cameras work amazingly in outdoor day light. So whether filming with a professional camera or a phone camera, you will still need proper lighting, I mean, massive amounts of lighting to light your products properly, because most of these F&B slow motion product videos are filmed indoor within a controlled environment.
Next, let’s talk about stop motion. Stop motion is a video production technique in which a series of still images are taken and then played back in sequence to create the illusion of motion. This technique is often used to create animations, but it can also be used to create really interesting and unique F&B videos.
Stop motion can be used in filming the process of preparing a dish, like the way that a chef assembles a sandwich or the way that a bartender mixes a cocktail. It can also be used to create a playful, whimsical feel, like a cake being decorated with frosting or a cup of coffee being poured.
To create stop motion video, you’ll need a camera (such as a DSLR or a smartphone camera) and a tripod. Set up your camera on the tripod and take a series of still images, moving the food or beverage slightly between each shot. Then, use software to put the still images together and create the illusion of motion.
One thing to keep in mind when shooting stop motion video is that you’ll need to pay attention to the continuity of the motion. Make sure that the food or beverage is in the same position in each shot, or else it will look like the motion is jerky and unnatural.
Both slow motion and stop motion can be used to create really interesting and engaging F&B videos. They can help to showcase the texture, movement, and details of your products in a way that regular video can’t. So, if you’re looking for a way to make your food and beverage videos stand out, consider using slow motion or stop motion. Happy filming!
